I saw what the greatest philosophers saw
when they turned their lenses toward the stars
to discover something so bright after years
of staring in the dark.

but I should have been looking over my shoulder
instead of dreaming of some intangible paradise
and now all the things that I thought were real
fall like leaves around my feet
and I would pick them up
but they never meant that much to me

my eyes focus light on the back of my mind
but they cannot see what's there
and I still can't see what's there

I once told a lover that I was
afraid to stay the same
but I realize now that I was wrong
and what I want tends to sway

so I never stop looking for a change of surroundings
because I'm never happy with where I am standing
I keep changing directions and now I feel lost
and I guess that now I'm afraid
that I'll never change

my eyes focus light on the back of my mind
and give me the sight on which I rely
but it's my brain that decides
on how the world should appear
preconditioned with a lifetime of experience
and it plays tricks on me

because I could have sworn that I saw
an easy way out
and I thought that I knew
which road I was heading down
but my impression of the world wasn't right
and what I thought was the sunrise
was just passing headlights
